The backdrop is the one piece of decor that appears in nearly every photograph, so it deserves the most thought.

Pick a palette first

Two main colours and one accent are plenty. Soft pink with white and gold, for example, looks polished and keeps the room from feeling busy.

Mix textures

Combine balloons with fabric drapes, fresh or artificial florals and a few lit elements. The contrast between soft and shiny is what gives a stage depth on camera.

Ideas to start from

  • A balloon column or arch framing a pastel curtain.
  • A name sign or age number in front of florals.
  • A small cake table with a matching skirt and low lighting.
  • A floor-level seating area for children at the front.

Think about the camera

Leave clear space in front of the stage, keep lights warm and avoid very shiny surfaces directly behind guests.
